How a tarot reading works here

There is no hidden result waiting for you. When you open a spread, the deck is shuffled fresh, and the cards you tap are the cards you get. About three in ten land reversed. Each card is then read in its position, with a text written for that position: the same card means something different as your past than as your near future, and something different again in a love reading than in a career reading.

Every reading can be shared with a link that always shows the same cards. Your questions and answers never leave your browser.

What the cards are

A tarot deck has 78 cards. The one used here is the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1909 under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. It is the most widely used deck in the United States and the one almost every book and course teaches from, so what you learn here carries over to any modern deck.

Twenty-two cards make up the Major Arcana. They run from The Fool tothe World and deal with the big turns of a life: changes that leave a mark, deep lessons, chapters that close. When a spread is full of Major Arcana, the matter is not a passing mood but a period that will shape your story.

The other 56 cards are the Minor Arcana, in four suits:

Upright and reversed cards

When the deck is shuffled, some cards end up upside down. An upright card shows its energy flowing freely. Reversed, the same energy is blocked, delayed, or turned inward. A reversed card is not automatically bad news:Death reversed usually describes a change you are resisting, not a disaster.
