Temperance description and symbolism

A large winged angel in a white robe stands with one foot on a rock and the other in a pool of water, pouring liquid between two golden cups. On the angel's chest sits a square containing a triangle, and on its forehead a solar disc. A path winds from the pool toward distant mountains, where a golden crown glows in the sunrise, and yellow irises bloom on the bank. The angel's face is calm and fully absorbed in the pouring.

The pouring between cups is the whole card: two separate things being blended into one, patiently, with nothing spilled. Smith drew the stream of water at a slightly impossible angle, flowing diagonally from the lower cup to the upper, as if to say the mixing here is not ordinary. The angel's feet on rock and in water are the material and the emotional held in balance. The triangle inside the square is spirit inside form, and the sun on the forehead is awareness. The path to the crown is the long road of moderation that leads to real achievement, and the irises are Iris, the Greek messenger between gods and people.

The card's name comes from the old virtue of temperance, which meant mixing, measuring and finding the right proportion. In the Rider-Waite deck that virtue has wings.

Temperance upright meaning

Temperance upright is the card of finding the right mix. Two parts of your life that seem to compete, work and home, logic and feeling, two people with different needs, can be combined if you adjust the proportions patiently. The card tells you not to choose between extremes but to find the measure that lets both exist. It is slow, deliberate energy, and it tends to arrive after a period of upheaval as the promise that things will settle.

Healing lives here, in the broadest sense: recovery after a hard time, the mending of a conflict, the integration of a lesson into who you are. Temperance also asks for moderation in a practical sense. Less of what you overdo, more of what you neglect, until the blend works. Beside the Star, it describes a recovery that is both gentle and complete. Alongside the Two of Cups, it is a partnership in which two very different people have found their rhythm.

Temperance reversed meaning

Reversed, Temperance means the mix is off. Too much of something, work, drink, worry, spending, giving, and not enough of its counterweight. The symptoms are familiar: short temper, poor sleep, decisions made in a hurry, relationships strained because one side keeps overflowing into the other. The angel has set down the cups, and everything is pooling where it should not.

The reversal can also describe clashing elements that refuse to blend, a job and a relationship that cannot coexist, two values that keep fighting, a conflict where neither side is willing to adjust. Impatience sits underneath it all: the desire to have the result without the measuring. The advice is to slow down and change one proportion at a time. When Temperance reversed falls next to the Devil, the excess has become a dependency. With the Five of Wands, the disharmony is being acted out in the open and nobody is listening.

Temperance in love and as feelings

For love, Temperance upright describes a relationship with balance and flow, where two different temperaments complement rather than compete. It favors patience: a slow-building connection, a couple working through a difference calmly, a reconciliation after a quarrel. For singles, it suggests that the right person will be found through moderation rather than intensity, and that you may need to blend your own contradictions before someone else can fit beside them.

As feelings, Temperance means someone feels calm and steady about you. They are not swept away, but they are not indifferent either; they see the two of you as a good blend and are willing to take time. It is affection with patience built in. Reversed, the card points to a relationship out of balance, one person giving more, needs that clash, or passion that keeps tipping into conflict. The Lovers beside an upright Temperance suggests a union that has both chemistry and equilibrium.

Temperance in career and money

Career readings with Temperance favor collaboration, diplomacy and steady progress. A team with different skills working well together, a project that needs careful coordination, a role that requires mediating between departments or personalities. It is also the card of work-life balance, and it may be reminding you that a sustainable pace will get you further than a sprint. Healing professions, hospitality, teaching and any job that combines things, whether ingredients, people or ideas, suit its energy.

Money under Temperance is managed in moderation: a balanced budget, saving and spending in proportion, avoiding both stinginess and splurging. Growth is steady rather than dramatic. Reversed, it can describe overspending, a work schedule that has swallowed your life, or a financial partnership where the contributions are badly matched.

Temperance in health and well-being

Few cards speak more directly to health and well-being than Temperance. It is the card of moderation and recovery: eating in proportion, moving regularly without overtraining, sleeping enough, drinking water, and giving a tired body the time it needs to repair. Practices that blend body and mind, yoga, tai chi, swimming, walking with attention, fit its energy. It often appears when someone is healing from a hard stretch and needs permission to go slowly.

Reversed, Temperance names excess plainly: too much caffeine, alcohol, screen time or work, too little rest or stillness. The body is out of proportion and is saying so. The way back is through small adjustments rather than a dramatic detox. A card can tell you the blend is off; it cannot say what is going on inside you, and that is a question for a doctor.

Temperance as a yes or no

Upright: Yes. Temperance upright answers yes, though gradually. Patience and a balanced approach bring the result you are hoping for, without any need to force it.

Reversed: Maybe. Reversed, Temperance says maybe. The outcome depends on restoring some balance first; as long as one side of the situation is in excess, nothing settles.

The card's advice

Adjust the proportions instead of choosing an extreme, and give the blend time to settle. Temperance reminds you that patience is a skill, and that most healing happens one careful measure at a time.
