What is a life path number?
Numerology is the old idea that numbers carry meaning beyond counting. The system most people use today is called Pythagorean numerology, after the Greek philosopher who believed numbers held the hidden order of the universe. In modern practice, the numbers drawn from your birth date and your name are read as a kind of personality map.
Of all those numbers, the life path number carries the most weight. It never changes, because your birthday never changes, so it is read as the thread that runs through your whole life: how you handle challenges, what drives you, how you love and what kind of work feels right. Like a tarot reading, it works best as a tool for self-reflection, not as a fixed fate.
How to calculate it
There are a few ways to add up a birth date. This calculator uses the most common one, which keeps master numbers intact: reduce the month, the day and the year separately to a single digit (or to 11 or 22), then add the three results and reduce again.
For example, for September 17, 1990: the month, September, is 9; the day, 17, becomes 1 + 7 = 8; the year 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Add them up: 9 + 8 + 1 = 18, and 1 + 8 = 9. The life path number is 9.
If you hit 11, 22 or 33 along the way, you stop there: those are master numbers. Someone with a life path 11 has the qualities of a 2, turned up louder and with a bigger assignment.
Master numbers
Master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. Numerologists treat them as amplified versions of their root numbers (2, 4 and 6), linked to big potential and big pressure. People with a master number tend to feel both the gifts and the struggles of their root number more intensely.
Having a master number isn't better or worse. Plenty of 11s and 22s spend years living like a 2 or a 4, and only grow into the other side of their number with time and experience.

FAQ
How do I calculate my life path number?
Reduce your birth month, day and year separately to a single digit, add the three results together and reduce again. Don't reduce 11, 22 or 33.
What is the rarest life path number?
33 is the rarest, because it only appears with very specific combinations of month, day and year. 22 and 2 come next; 2 is uncommon because many dates that would lead to it stop at 11 instead.
Can my life path number change?
No. It comes from your date of birth, which doesn't change. Numbers based on your name, like the expression number, can shift if you change your name.
What's the difference between a life path number and an expression number?
Your life path number comes from your birth date and describes the road you walk. Your expression number comes from the letters of your full name and describes how you show up to other people.
Is numerology scientific?
No. It's a symbolic tradition, like tarot or astrology. It can be a fun and thoughtful way to look at yourself, but it isn't a substitute for professional advice.
