How tarot birth cards are calculated

This calculator uses the method taught by Mary K. Greer in Tarot for Your Self (1984) andArchetypal Tarot, which is the way most tarot readers in the United States work out birth cards:

  1. Add the month, the day and the full year of your birth as whole numbers. For July 4, 1990: 7 + 4 + 1990 = 2001.
  2. Add up the digits of that total: 2 + 0 + 0 + 1 = 3.
  3. If the result is greater than 22, add its digits together once more (for example 1 + 1 + 1999 = 2011 is fine, but 12 + 31 + 1999 = 2042 adds to 8, and 9 + 9 + 1999 = 2017 adds to 10; a total such as 28 would become 2 + 8 = 10).
  4. The number you end up with is a Major Arcana card: 1 is the Magician, 21 is the World, and 22 is the Fool (card 0).

If your number has two digits, that card is your personality card, and adding its digits gives your soul card (16, the Tower, reduces to 7, the Chariot). If your number has one digit, your personality card and soul card are the same, and the two-digit card that reduces to it joins your constellation. The number 19 is special: it reduces to 10 and again to 1, so people born under it have three cards, the Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician. And 22 reduces to 4, which is why the Fool and the Emperor share a constellation with Death (13).

Note that other authors add the digits of the date one by one instead of the whole numbers (Angeles Arrien's method). Both give a card in the Major Arcana, but they can give different cards for the same birthday. This page uses Greer's version, and the result lists every card in the constellation so you can read all of them.

Birth cards are not a fortune. They are a lens: the personality card describes how you tend to meet the world, and the soul card the deeper lesson that keeps coming back in different forms.
