Wheel of Fortune description and symbolism

A great wheel hangs in a blue sky, its rim marked with the letters T-A-R-O between Hebrew characters that spell the name of God, and its spokes carrying alchemical symbols for mercury, sulfur, water and salt. A sphinx holding a sword sits calmly on top. A red, jackal-headed figure, Anubis, rises on the right side of the wheel, and a yellow serpent slides down the left. In the four corners, winged creatures sit on clouds reading books: an angel, an eagle, a lion and a bull.

The four creatures are the fixed signs of the zodiac, Aquarius, Scorpio, Leo and Taurus, and also the four evangelists; they read because they are learning from what the wheel does rather than riding it. The sphinx on top is stability within change, the part of you that stays balanced no matter where the wheel is in its turn. Anubis rising is what is coming up; the serpent descending is what is falling away, and Smith painted them in motion to make it clear that the wheel never stops. The letters on the rim can be read as TARO, ROTA (wheel), or ORAT (speaks), and the alchemical symbols say the whole of material life is turning here.

Nothing in the picture stands on the ground. The Wheel of Fortune floats, and that is how luck tends to arrive, with no visible support and no warning.

Wheel of Fortune upright meaning

Upright, the Wheel of Fortune says the situation is about to turn, and usually in your favor. A stretch of effort or waiting gives way to movement: an opportunity drops in, a long-awaited answer arrives, circumstances shift without any obvious cause. The card asks you to be ready rather than to be in control, because this is one of the moments in life where the big levers are not in your hands. Say yes quickly when the chance comes; wheels do not pause for deliberation.

The deeper message is about cycles. What is happening now has happened before in some form, and knowing where you are in the pattern helps you ride it. If things are going well, enjoy them and prepare for the next turn. If things have been hard, the card promises they will not stay that way. Karma, in the ordinary sense of consequences, also lives here: what you set in motion is coming back around. With the Sun, the turn brings unmistakable good fortune. Next to the Two of Pentacles, it asks you to stay flexible while several things shift at once.

Wheel of Fortune reversed meaning

The Wheel reversed is a turn that goes against you, or a wheel that will not move. A plan hits an unexpected setback, luck seems to dry up, and the sense of being at the mercy of forces outside your control becomes hard to shake. The card does not say you did something wrong; sometimes the wheel simply dips. What it does say is that fighting the turn exhausts you more than accepting it would.

Another reading is about resisting a change that is clearly coming. You can feel the wheel starting to move and you are holding onto the spokes, trying to keep things exactly as they were. The reversal can also mark a pattern you keep repeating, the same kind of job, the same type of partner, the same mistake dressed in new clothes, and it invites you to break the cycle rather than ride it one more time. When the Wheel reversed appears with the Eight of Swords, the sense of being stuck is largely in your head. With the Hanged Man, the pause is real and the only sensible move is patience.

Wheel of Fortune in love and as feelings

Love under the Wheel of Fortune is a card of turning points. For singles, it suggests a meeting that feels fated, often through coincidence, a change of plans, a place you were not meant to be. For couples, it marks a shift in the relationship's season: moving in, a proposal, a move to another city, or a phase ending so another can begin. The card asks you to welcome the change rather than measure it against the way things used to be.

As feelings, the Wheel means the person senses that meeting you was not an accident. Their feelings are shifting toward you, possibly faster than they expected, and they may feel swept along. It is excitement mixed with a sense of destiny. Reversed, the card can describe a relationship stuck in a loop of the same argument, a love affected by circumstances neither of you chose, or the return of an ex who represents a cycle you have not finished. The Lovers beside an upright Wheel suggests the fated meeting leads to a real choice.

Wheel of Fortune in career and money

In a career reading, the Wheel of Fortune brings opportunity through change: a job offer out of nowhere, a reorganization that opens a door, a promotion that comes from good timing you didn't plan. It favors the person who stays adaptable. If you have been applying for months with no response, the card says the pattern is about to break, and if you are comfortable, it hints that comfort will not last and that is not bad news.

Money under the Wheel is luck in both directions. Windfalls, unexpected bonuses, a lucky investment, but also the reminder that what comes easily can leave the same way. Save some of the upswing. Reversed, the card warns about a financial setback, a market turn, or a cycle of earning and spending that never leaves you ahead. Breaking the pattern matters more than waiting for better luck.

Wheel of Fortune in health and well-being

Health and well-being under the Wheel are about rhythm. Energy comes in cycles, high weeks and low weeks, and the card asks you to work with them instead of expecting a constant level. Seasonal changes, sleep patterns, the ups and downs of mood across a month all belong here. It also carries a note of optimism: if you have been in a low phase, the turn upward is coming, and small changes started now will catch the momentum.

Reversed, the Wheel points to a habit cycle you cannot seem to exit, the same resolution made and abandoned, the same crash after the same overexertion. The way out is to change one input in the loop rather than the whole routine at once. Tarot can describe the pattern; it has nothing to say about the medical details, and any specific concern belongs with a doctor rather than a card.

Wheel of Fortune as a yes or no

Upright: Yes. The Wheel of Fortune upright answers yes. Circumstances are shifting in your favor, and the turn you are hoping for is already underway.

Reversed: No. Reversed, the Wheel says no, or at least not yet. The timing is against you, and forcing the matter now will only spin you back to where you started.

The card's advice

Stay balanced on top of the wheel instead of clinging to the rim. The Wheel of Fortune reminds you that every phase passes, that luck rewards readiness, and that what you set in motion comes back around.
