Algiz rune meaning
Algiz is the fifteenth rune of the Elder Futhark and the seventh of Hagal's aett. It stood for the sound z, which later became a final r in the Norse languages. Its name is usually linked to the elk and to elk-sedge, a sharp-edged plant mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon rune poem: it grows in marshes and cuts anyone who tries to grab it.
That image gives the rune its main meaning: something that protects because it knows how to defend itself. Its shape, with three arms opening upward, is also read as a person raising their arms to the sky, so Algiz is tied to a connection with something bigger than yourself and to a sharp protective instinct.
Algiz upright
Algiz upright is one of the most reassuring runes you can draw. It tells you you're protected: you have support, your defenses are working and you can move forward with confidence. It also says your intuition is especially sharp right now; if something or someone feels off, listen to that.
It's a good time to look after yourself and the people you love, set healthy boundaries and surround yourself with people who lift you up. Algiz doesn't promise there won't be problems, only that you have what you need to face them.
Algiz reversed
Algiz reversed signals that you're more exposed than you think. You may have let your guard down with someone who doesn't deserve it, be ignoring your gut, or struggle to set boundaries so others take advantage.
It can also point the other way: protecting yourself so much that you shut people out and trust no one. The rune asks you to check your defenses, neither too low nor too high.
In love
In love, Algiz describes a relationship where you feel safe and cared for. If you're with someone, it's a good time to protect what you've built and not let outsiders weigh in too much. If you're looking, your intuition will help you see who deserves your trust.
Reversed, it warns of a relationship where you give more protection than you get, or a person who doesn't respect your boundaries.
Work and money
At work and with money, Algiz advises caution and foresight: read contracts, keep copies, build a savings cushion. It can also announce support from someone more experienced who has your back.
Reversed, it warns of risks you're overlooking: a shaky investment, a coworker who isn't as loyal as they seem, or a situation where it's smart to get everything in writing.
Algiz’s advice: Trust your instincts and protect what matters, without shutting out the people who truly want to help.
