Thurisaz rune meaning
Thurisaz is the third rune of the Elder Futhark and stands for the sound th. The thurs were giants, chaotic and powerful forces that clash with the gods in the myths. In the Anglo-Saxon rune poem the rune is called thorn: something that hurts anyone who grabs it carelessly.
Both images shape its meaning: a force you can't ignore. It can protect, like a thorn hedge, or do damage, like a giant on the loose. That's why Thurisaz asks you to think before you act.
Thurisaz upright
Thurisaz upright signals an obstacle or a tense situation, but also gives you the means to deal with it. It's time to defend your boundaries, say what you think and protect yourself from anyone trying to take advantage.
The rune advises against rushing in: before you react, watch. Sometimes the best answer to a conflict is waiting for the storm to lose steam.
Thurisaz reversed
Thurisaz reversed warns about acting without thinking: impulsive decisions, hurtful words or getting into a fight that won't do you any good. It can also point to someone acting against you with bad intentions.
The rune asks for calm and caution. This isn't the moment to sign anything, argue or make big decisions in the heat of the moment.
In love
In love, Thurisaz points to tension, jealousy or an argument that might clear the air. Handled with care, the conflict can make the relationship stronger.
Reversed, it warns of words that wound and a relationship where one person is always on the defensive.
Work and money
At work, Thurisaz points to competition, friction with coworkers or red tape. It asks you to hold your ground firmly but without aggression.
Reversed, it advises against big decisions for now: check everything twice before you commit.
Thurisaz’s advice: Pause before you react: the thorn protects the rose, but it also pricks anyone who grabs without looking.
